Wicked Whispers & Racy Rumors! Exclusive news about the new Michael Jackson residency show headed to Mandalay Bay this spring. It will not have a title -- just a number. Cirque du Soleil officials are tight-lipped about the numeral they’ve chosen, so the guessing game begins.
I also have learned that the Montreal cast and crew move here to begin rehearsals on the nearly completed stage at Mandalay as of Feb. 18. One spywitness who saw the acts rehearsing in Montreal said the acrobats are the world’s best and exceed any other performed to date in any Cirque show.
STRIP ARENA? I’m reliably told at the highest-level sources that the Board of Directors of one of our major hotel groups will meet next month to approve or reject management’s request for a $400 million Wall Street loan to build an arena on The Strip on land behind New York-York and Monte Carlo.
If approved and when constructed, I think it spells doomsday for the aging Thomas & Mack. However, with only 15,000 to 20,000 seats, it would not stop the current 60,000-seat UNLV arena plans from moving forward.
BONO? SCARLETT? I am hearing solid rumors that U2 frontman Bono will perform at the Quincy Jones and Sir Michael Caine 80th birthday and Keep Memory Alive salute at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 13 and that gorgeous actress Scarlett Johansson will add Hollywood glamour to the event.
Expect official announcements this week. This lineup of luminaries, with Barbra Streisand already in place, will make it the star-studded celebration of the year.
TYSON’S BAR? Has boxing champion Mike Tyson locked up plans to open a bar and restaurant in the new pedestrian shopping arcade at The Linq?
DREAM RIDES: Expect the wildest, biggest spending high-roller week in La Vegas history when all 150 members of the Dubai Ferrari Race & Road Rally Group arrive here this spring. I’ve learned that they’ll all have Ferraris to drive while here and will get to take them home.
PIA’S SHOW: Singer Pia Zadora, who moved to Summerlin after marrying a Las Vegas police officer after her split with former Riviera hotel tycoon owner Meshulam Riklis, is shooting a new reality TV show of her life on the comeback trail. Filming has started for the series set to air on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network.
VENETIAN CONCERTS: The Home Shopping Network has confirmed my original rumored report and will produce four live, star-studded concerts at The Venetian’s 1,800-seat theater this year. The first is set for Feb. 8 with Michael Bolton’s tribute to Motown with Martha Reeves, Valerie Simpson, Melanie Fiona, Smokey Robinson and Human Nature as his guests.
HSN has been planning this great concert package for a year. The concerts will run one hour to 100 million homes and give viewers a chance to talk with Michael and his co-stars during the show via Twitter and Facebook. No word yet on the next three star attractions, but you know Vegas DeLuxe will have them first!
