‘Wicked’ cast plays ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ at the Tropicana
Catch The Wicked Rocky Horror Show at the Tropicana.
Men in drag and lipstick. Women fearing the worst for Brad and Janet at the hands of the mad, pansexual, cross-dressing scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter while lab-creating his muscle man Rocky Horror.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which dates back to 1973 and turned into a cult phenomenon with the 1975 movie, gets a one-night outing tonight at Tropicana with the cast of “Wicked” from the Smith Center for the Performing Arts trading the costumes of Oz for the spiked heels of “Horror.”
Nicole Parker (Elphaba), Patti Murin (Glinda), Kim Zimmer (Madame Morrible) and Justin Brill (Boq), plus, the cast, band and touring staff join together to raise funds for our local Golden Rainbow HIV/AIDS organization and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. To date, “Wicked” has raised more than $2 million for the cause.
In 2002, I took over Dick Cavett’s role as the narrator on Broadway for a two-week guest run, and although exhausting writing a new five-minute opening monologue every night and running around a theater for two hours, it was a great and fun experience despite falling off the stage in heels the first night I dressed drag and lost my balance!
I followed in the high heels of Rio headliner Penn Jillette, and talk-show titan Jerry Springer followed me. I have a feeling that tonight will come with just as much merry-making mischief as the crowd does the “Time Warp.”
The “Wicked” cast in their “Horror” outfits will meet with supporters before and after the show. Our friends at “Wicked” continue their incredibly successful run at Smith Center through Oct. 7.
Incidentally, “Rocky Horror” still holds the record as the longest-running release in cinematic history, and the show has played everywhere globally, including Norway, Iceland, Germany, Brazil, South Africa, Peru and the Philippines.
