Strip Scribbles: Miss America hopeful faces surgery to fight cancer
It’s a story that will break your heart and make you cry. All eyes will be on the 2013 Miss America Pageant in January when beautiful Miss District of Columbia 2012 Allyn Rose competes for the title. Allyn will travel to Planet Hollywood knowing she faces drastic surgery to combat a rare form of cancer that will kill her.
If 24-year-old Allyn wins the title with her artistic roller-skating, she will delay getting a double mastectomy for the year of her reign. If she returns home from Las Vegas without the title, she will have the surgery within a month.
Allyn, who competed here last year and made it to the finals as Miss Maryland in the rival Miss USA Pageant, says her platform is to promote breast cancer awareness. The model and collegiate athlete lost her mother, Judith, to breast cancer in 2004 at age 50. The family has a long history of tragedy with the rare gene mutation known as Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome. The disease, proved through genetic testing, indicates that Allyn is at high risk, too.
Her decision for the radical mastectomy is an attempt to fight certain death. “The message is prevention. All the women in my family passed away from breast cancer,” Allyn said. “If there’s one 16-year-old girl who doesn’t have to live her life having lost her mother, then I’ve won.”
Vegas DeLuxe will meet with Allyn when she arrives here in January and report her progress through the preliminaries and the ABC telecast Jan. 12.
BAJA STAMINA: His nickname is “Ballistic” for good reason. Racecar driver B.J. Baldwin, son of CityCenter chief Bobby Baldwin, may well have set a new world record over the weekend in the 45th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race. We’re still waiting on the official time sheets, but preliminary reports had him narrowly behind in 2nd place but driving the entire 1,121-mile trip in less than 19 hours 45 minutes without a backup driver change. It was his third 2nd place win in the tough desert run, and he was so close behind Mexican father-and-son team Gustavo Vildosola Sr. and Jr., he thought that he could clinch the championship -- but not quite. B.J. is the first solo driver in 45 years to place 2nd.
BAGATELLE OPENING: It was the grand-opening gala party you shouldn’t have missed: gorgeous can-can girls, a knock-your-socks-off saxophone player who hopped over the booths, “angels” from above on moving swings pouring free champagne, stilt walkers and other colorful circus creatures. Everywhere you looked, there were girls, girls, girls, and even more gorgeous girls as model servers, flying acrobats, dancers and welcome parade.
Bagatelle, alongside the Tropicana, is a luxurious and lavishly decorated restaurant and supper club with a fabulous menu and an extraordinary outdoor party deck of two other restaurant areas for its famous champagne brunches. There also is a concert stage surrounded by a beach volleyball court and swimming pools for as many as 3,000. It’s unlike anything else here and has become overnight the talk and the toast of the town.
NASCAR CHAMPION: Five-time champion Jimmie Johnson was beaten in the final NASCAR race of the season Sunday, and Brad Keselowski will now be feted in Las Vegas when the annual Champions Week Strip parade and awards show take place here next week (Nov. 27-30). Expect Brad to send out dozens of tweets because he’s a big booster of Twitter, having been fined for tweeting from the track during a red flag. A phone can apparently manipulate the electronic fuel injection system. He was fined $25,000 a week ago in Phoenix for tweeting behind the wheel!!!
LFL EXPANDS: Our Las Vegas-headquartered Lingerie Football League ended its first season in Canada on Sunday with great expansion news. Two teams will be added next year, and a national French-language Canadian broadcast network will televise the games next season. The B.C. Angels won 25-12 over the Saskatoon Sirens in the championship. Our Las Vegas Sin home games start June 22.
GET WELL WISHES: Laura Croft’s Thunder From Down Under boyfriend Clint Scott is recovering from serious injuries sustained when he was hit by a truck while riding his triathlon bike. He spent two weeks in a hospital with a broken arm, a broken leg, busted ribs and collapsed lungs. He is now in rehabilitation and hopes to be back at the Excalibur show by February. We wish him a speedy recovery.
We also send get well wishes to former Crazy Girls at the Riviera dancer Shellee Renee, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. Her former topless cast mates got together for a party to provide her with gifts and a toast to a fast recovery.
RUGBY RETURNS: Hot on the heels of being honored as Rugby Event of the Year at the annual Rugby Expo in England, the USA Sevens returns to our Sam Boyd Stadium on Feb. 8.
DONNY’S AWARD: Vegas PBS won an Emmy Award in the Director, Post Production category for the program “Vegas PBS Arts Showcase,” which was hosted by Flamingo headliner Donny Osmond. In return, Vegas PBS had an honorary award made up for Donny for his contributions to the excellence of the program.
