Blue Man Group officially premieres Monte Carlo show tonight

Tonight is the premiere of Blue Man Group’s exciting, offbeat and unique production in its new theater at the Monte Carlo. It’s their third Las Vegas home since landing on the Strip in March 2000.

Back then, they began a 5-year run at the Luxor before moving to the Venetian in 2005. That residency lasted through September of this year.

The men in blue literally landed after skydiving in parachutes at the Monte Carlo last month. Now that they’ve shaken out all the intricacies of the move and new stage effects, they are ready to unveil the all-new show tonight.

Festivities will start with a percussion procession in front of the new theater at the casino, which has been made over from when it was master magician Lance Burton’s home, followed by the Jabbawockeez, who are moving to nearby Luxor.

The “electric” procession will feature a musical centipede of percussion instruments, musicians in illuminated suits, robots and puppets co-created with 3D designer Michael Curry. Blue Man Group execs describe it as a “Percussipede!”

Blue Man Group has grown into a large theatrical organization since college pals Chris Wink, Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman founded it in 1987. They played Manhattan outdoor venues before landing their debut off-Broadway show “Tubes” in 1991.

Nineteen years later, that show still runs at Astor Place Theater. There also are productions in Boston, Chicago, Orlando and Las Vegas. A German production has been playing in Berlin since 2006 and on the Norwegian Epic cruise line since 2010. Other productions have played in Canada, England, Japan, Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands.

The new show still features that LED screen posting messages to audiences by name and the splash zone where it’s safety first to wear raincoats to avoid flying paint, water and melted marshmallows. The musical tubing is still there but with a new instrument known as the Neuronulum.

Giant iPads and robots depicting our brave new technological world have been added. Watch out, too, for the multi-eyed fish swimming over the audience as they take their seats. Meantime, the guys who are blue in the face are on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” today promoting their show.

Celebrations for the show and home continue at Monte Carlo tonight after the premiere, and in accordance with tradition of keeping mystery intact, none of the Blue Men will speak or sign autographs, except for a smudge of that blue makeup.
