The Jabbawockeez will become the first dance crew and Las Vegas headliner stars in Hip Hop International’s 11-year history to receive the Living Legend of Hip Hop Award. The Monte Carlo headliners, who will be moving to a new Luxor theater next year, received the news this afternoon, and the award will be presented to them at the World Championship Finals of the USA and World Hip Hop Dance Championships on Aug. 5 at Orleans Arena.
Past award recipients include Randy Jackson, M.C. Hammer and Toni Basil, who choreographed Cher’s show at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace. Hip Hop International organizes the USA and World Hip Hop Dance Championships starting July 30 for the third year here. HHI created “Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew,” which just wrapped its seventh season on MTV, and “American Idol” judge Randy will be here for the finals.
HHI President Howard Schwartz said: “Jabbawockeez’s unmatched mystique and captivating performance style launched the group from street credible to world famous through live performances and high-profile media attention. In the process, they have inspired many of their fellow street dancers to pursue careers and reach for their dreams in dance.”
More than 6,000 fans, including 2,500 of the world’s best dance crews, b-boys, poppers, lockers and all-stylers from 40 nations, will witness the Jabbawockeez presentation at the World Hip Hop Dance Championship Finals.
News of the Jabbawockeez award leaked out this afternoon when former Mayor Oscar Goodman was at Fremont Street Experience as Elektrolytes, the newly crowned winners of “ABDC,” performed in a showcase to announce the World Championships. Also at the preview was Prodigy, our Las Vegas dance crew that counts hometown hero Andre Agassi and wife Steffi Graff as big fans. The defending champions in the Youth Division are hoping to repeat their victory.
