100th episode of Travel Channel’s ‘Bizarre Foods’ in L.V. airs tonight
Two-time James Beard Award winner Andrew Zimmern kicks off his Season 6 of eight 1-hour episodes of the Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods America” tonight with the 100th episode set here in Las Vegas.
Cameras filmed the adventurous culinary explorer as he showed the unusual cuisine found in the Entertainment Capital of the World; we posted our interview with Andrew on Feb. 22. Andrew’s advice remains the same: “If it looks good, eat it!”
To commemorate the milestone, the Travel Channel will air a retrospective special, “Bizarre Foods Celebrates 100,” at 8 p.m. PT (watch him eat a frog’s beating heart in Japan!) leading into the premiere Las Vegas episode as he uncovers why our city is about extremes -- biggest, best, most expensive and elaborate -- and includes a pig farm.
From over-the-top-excess including $750 cupcakes, $1,000 sundaes and a hamburger priced at $5,000, Andrew went behind the velvet curtain at top luxury hotels including the Bellagio and MGM Grand. At the Bellagio buffet -- feeding 4,000 people a day -- armies of people turn out handcrafted perfection in quantity (more than 16,000 pastries per day) with a supply of top-quality items including 4,000 homemade sausages, 400 pounds of prime rib and 2,500 pounds of fish delivered fresh six days a week.
Over at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Andrew filmed the army of star chefs, among them Tom Colicchio, catering the star-studded Muhammad Ali 70th birthday celebration of 1,800 guests. Check your local listings for air times and repeated viewings.
