Punk rock food critic Al Mancini is about to launch his second video food series next week, and it comes with “out of the ordinary” surprises. One of the three respected authors of Eating Las Vegas: The 50 Essential Restaurants, Al has filmed people from his alternative, non-foodie life to the top level of the food world and vice versa.
It’s a unique concept and certain to provoke comments from viewers, certainly controversial one way or the other. Al has filmed Andre Rochat’s top chef cooking at the Double Down Saloon, and tattoo artist Dirk Vermin tastes caviar for the first time. Al also has porn stars Jenna Haze and Joanna Angel debating the virtues of steak at STK in the Cosmopolitan.
Then the appropriately named hardcore metal bands Mushroomhead and Bad Brains dine at Morels in the Palazzo and Nove Italiano in the Palms. Las Vegas chefs cooking on the series include Stephen Hopcraft, Geno Bernardo and Gary LaMorte. The official launch is next week. Meantime, follow Al’s antics at AlMancini.net.
*Congratulations to new Caesars Palace residency star Shania Twain, who is back on the Billboard charts for the first time in six years.
Her new single “Today Is Your Day” premiered at No. 40, making it the fourth-highest start of her 33 singles since starting her career back 1993. The last time her name was on the chart was in 2005 with “Shoes” from the Desperate Housewives soundtrack.
*The fifth anniversary of Phantom -- the Las Vegas Spectacular was a champagne celebration onstage at the Venetian on Thursday night, and photographer Denise Truscello was onsite for a photo gallery. Anthony Crivello, who has performed nearly 1,900 shows as The Phantom, said: “Each anniversary is a special event, but what is remarkable is that our show has been able to sustain itself in really tough economic times.”

*Talk about a small world! The star soccer players from England’s Leyton Orient team started their five-day Las Vegas vacation prize with a visit to Gallery Nightclub at Planet Hollywood and bumped into two rival British players from Arsenal that they’d tied with in the FA Cup, which won them the free trip here. The Leighton players thanked the Arsenal players for making their trip to Vegas possible by not beating them. Planet Hollywood mogul Robert Earl picked up their tab at his Planet Hollywood at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, and last night, the Alizma Triplets and I welcomed them to Buca di Beppo, with Tom Donoghue shooting them at Planet Hollywood and Denise Truscello onsite at Buca di Beppo.
*Legendary magician John Calvert, who played Las Vegas for decades, is being honored with a two-day 100th birthday celebration that started in New York yesterday and wraps up today. Las Vegas magicians Stan Allen, Jeff McBride and Ed Alonzo flew there to join more than 12 international wizards at the Magic on Manhattan event to also mark John and Tammy Calvert’s 50th wedding anniversary.
