L.V. dance crew The Prodigy wins USA Hip Hop Dance Championship
By Don Chareunsy
The Prodigy became the first dance crew from Las Vegas to win the USA Hip Hop Dance Championship yesterday at Red Rock Resort in the event’s 10-year history. The seven youths, ages 7 to 12, won the gold medal in the Juniors Division with hometown hero and tennis legend Andre Agassi cheering on the group.
The Prodigy competes against national hip-hop dance champions from 35 countries in the 10th Annual World Hip Hop Dance Championship, which begins today at Red Rock. The Prodigy is scheduled to compete tomorrow.
More than 2,000 of the world’s best street dancers, including defending world champions ReQuest of New Zealand, are competing in the World Hip Hop Dance Championship. Today’s highlights include a gathering of the nations and preliminaries in the Varsity Division (ages 13 to 17), while Juniors and Adult Divisions (ages 18 and older) compete tomorrow.
The top crews in each division advance to the semifinals. Tomorrow also includes the debut of Hip Hop International’s world championship for MegaCrews comprised of 15 to 40 dancers. HHI’s founders are the creators of MTV’s Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew, which was won in Season 1 by the Jabbawockeez, now headliners at the Monte Carlo.
Congratulations to The Prodigy on its history-making win, and best of luck to the talented local youths in the world championships.
