Unless there’s a last-minute surprise upset and a TV viewer voting revolt, it looks certain that next Monday’s Dancing With the Stars finals will be a showdown between two Las Vegas dance professionals. That then leaves only one question for tonight’s Week 9 semifinals.
Will long-shot teen activist Bristol Palin and her partner Mark Ballas, who dance an Argentine Tango and the samba, finally be booted? Or will Disney star Kyle Massey and his partner Lacey Schwimmer, who dance the same dances, exit?
If Bristol squeaks through, it would be an all-female celebrity finale, with singer Brandy dancing with Le Reve choreographer Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Jennifer Grey dancing with Las Vegas Academy star Derek Hough.
Tonight, Brandy and Maks dance the Argentine Tango and a paso doble, while Jennifer and Derek dance the waltz and a cha cha. Annie Lennox performs on tomorrow’s results show, along with heartthrob singer Enrique Iglesias, who was here in Las Vegas last week for the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards at Mandalay Bay.
It comes down to numbers tonight: Only three points separate the two front-runners. Jennifer and Derek are in the lead with a cumulative 303 votes, while Brandy and Maks have a cumulative 300 votes over the past nine weeks.
However, it’s easy to see the difference between Bristol and Kyle. He leads with Lacey racking up a cumulative total of 273 votes, and Bristol with Mark have 241. In fact, Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya -- eliminated last week and placing fifth -- have 252 total votes.
TV viewer voting is the unpredictable factor, and last night’s premiere of Sarah Palin’s Alaska TV series might boost Bristol’s chances yet again. Observers have commented that she has benefited from her mother’s amazing political pull with the Tea Party success in the recent national elections and that votes for her endorsed candidates spilled over into her daughter’s favor on the AT&T hotlines for Dancing With the Stars.
Whoever goes tomorrow will be back on next week’s finals along with all the other celebrities who were kicked off in Season 11: David Hasselhoff, Michael Bolton, Margaret Cho, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Florence Henderson, Audrina Patridge, Rick Fox and Kurt Warner.
In addition to crowning the winner of the prized mirrored disco ball trophy next week is the 2-hour premiere of Skating With the Stars featuring our hometown rock hero Vince Neil (rehearsal photos were posted Saturday).
