After nearly two decades of marriage, The Mirage headliner Terry Fator and his wife Melinda have officially called it quits, and they signed the divorce papers Tuesday afternoon.
“We have made an amicable settlement. I’m very happy, and I am in a good place,” Melinda told me last night. “I don’t wish to add anything beyond that.”
The couple had been married for 18 years when they moved to Las Vegas for the start of Terry’s 10-year, $100 million contract headlining in his own theater at The Mirage. They would have been married 20 years in January.
Vegas DeLuxe has learned from reliable sources that the Texas couple agreed to the Nevada divorce on mutual grounds. Friends told me that Melinda plans to stay here in Las Vegas as a resident and to continue presenting and promoting new talent.
Melinda will celebrate her new single status tonight at dinner after attending the premiere of comedy actor Jason Alexander’s show The Donny Clay Experience at MGM Grand’s Hollywood Theater.
Insiders say that Terry was generous with the financial terms of the settlement. Last month, he also generously settled a legal suit brought by his former manager John McEntee, who said his contract was abruptly ended. Terry won America’s Got Talent Season 2’s $1 million prize and a run of shows here at the Las Vegas Hilton, which led to the mega-Mirage deal.
Terry has been romantically linked with Hawaiian model Taylor Makakoa since shortly after the February 2008 opening of his successful show at The Mirage that features his incredible singing impressions and cast of puppets. Taylor appears in the production nightly as the sexy guardian angel of his ventriloquist puppets.
Update @12:51 pm.: I talked with Terry early this afternoon, and he told me, "We're glad it's behind us. We wish each other the best! That's the official statement."
